Science 6--Week of 9/22

This week in science we have been exploring inquiry! 

We are actively participating in the "Designing the Investigation" phase as students are creating experiments at home to answer the question: "How can you make a penny the shiniest?"

This is a pre-assessment, so take a deep breath! Do the best you can and follow the rubric provided in class. This should be done on a SEPARATE sheet of paper of turn-in quality.

A day students: Penny lab Due FRIDAY

Wednesday/Thursday= Technology class. Students should always have tech journals handy in their back packs. 

Friday/Monday= Homework check/Journal Quiz

Back to school night! 9/18-- 6 pm!

Howdy Parents, 

This Thursday night (9/18) you will have the opportunity to experience a "Day in the Life of Your Student...".   Actually, it will be two days! Luckily we have shortened the A/B day so classes will only be about 10 minutes! The fun starts at 6 pm!  

This is an opportunity for us to meet and for you to get a glimpse of what the year will look like for 6th grade science, 8th grade math, and Algebra at ISB! 

I look forward to meeting you and working together to make this a successful year for your student at ISB.

Math 8 and Algebra 1-- Week of 9/15

This week we will continue our Interactive Math Program (IMP) unit on the Overland Trail! 

HW Due Tuesday: 

Classwork: Each group member needs to have 4 family units with ages, gender, relationships, and names. 

Homework: Hw #2 "Hats for the Family" 

Tuesday: Display families, family constraints, HW #3 "The search for dry trails" pg. 201

Thursday: The journey begins......  HW #5 "Lunchtime"pg. 208

Quiz Alert: We will have a quiz Monday 9/22! All classwork, warm-ups, and homework is fair game so be sure to be familiar with it and ask for help if you are feeling shaky.

Science 6--Week of 9/15/08

What is Science? 

This week we will continue our investigation of "What is Science?" We will be looking further at observations and how we interpret the data we collect with our senses. 

Upcoming Labs: 

Do you see what I see?--students will use quantitative and qualitative observations to communicate with each other about samples from the natural world. Volunteers please remember to bring your items (4 of the same) to class. 

Penny lab-

This at home lab will be used to investigate changes in experimental design and variables. Students will do some work on this lab at school but expect to see "hands-on homework" happening later this week and into next week. 

Inquiry and the Learning Cycle--

Formal investigation as to what the inquiry cycle is and practice on developing our skills in each of the steps.  These concepts of the learning/inquiry cycle will drive this unit "What is Science?" and students should expect a synthesis project bringing our learning all together with each component at the conclusion. More to come.....
